RIP: Yong Kang 15

Yong Kang 15 closed down…I obtusely thought it was under renovation or something. I guess I’ll have to change my Din Tai Fung + Yong Kang 15 routine.

But do not fear, the owner has another shaved ice shop – Ice Monster.

Ice Monster (re-opened)

Happy Shaved Ice eating !!!

What’s Taipei without lines? Not Taipei.

They give out those small canelé-shaped popsicles when the crowd outside look like they might start throwing punches.

Love the grumpy looking Mr. Ice Monster.

Classiest shaved ice joint in town! The spoon and napkin are already on the table, diner style.

Globe trotting

Bubble Milk Tea Sensation (160NT)

I’ve never seen this shaved ice flavor before! It’s actually not as sweet and sugary as a normal boba drink. Definitely 半糖 at the boba shops.

Lemon Orange Freeze (100NT)

One person portion. This menu item is quite sour! Reminds me a little of lemon sorbet-flavored palate cleanser. You will instantaneously go into the blue steel look after a spoonful of this.

Fresh Exotic Mixed Sensation (200NT)

This one is a lackluster to the Mango Sensation, in terms of sweetness and ingredients. The passion fruit you see in my photo…that’s all you get! Pineapples are not fresh; they used dried pineapples. You receive  like 8 slices of dried pineapples. But if you are not a sugar monster like myself, this shaved ice is probably more suitable for you.

Fresh Mango Sensation (200NT)

The crème de la crème of shaved ice! Huge chunks of mango in mango sauce/puree/concentrate (whatever it is). The ice is made from mango juices. This bowl can actually satiate my need for mango, quite the feat.

———————————————————————————————————————-

So there are 2 different types of shaved ice on the menu. The “avalanche” I believe is the milk ice covered with your selected toppings and a thing of panna cotta. Similar to the “blizzard” selection at Yong Kang 15. The “sensation” uses fruit juice ice.

Gosssssssssssip alert: I heard it through the grapevines the owners of the two establishments were previously in holy matrimony.

EDIT: WAS JUST INFORMED THAT YONG KANG 15 IS CLOSED!!!!

Yong Kang 15 (Part Deux)

RIP~!!!! RIP: Yong Kang 15

Date Visited: 4th of September, 2011

Name: Yong Kang 15
永康15

Address: No.15, Yongkang St., Da-an District, Taipei City 106
106台北市大安區永康街15號1F

It’s summertime! And one of the best part is mango ice!! I came to Yong Kang 15 earlier this year but the fruit of the season was strawberries. Now I want some mangoooo!

Mango Avalanche (NT$160)

——————————————————————————————————-

I would recommend getting the Mango Avalanche. There’s another option called Mango Blizzard, which is 20NT less. The difference? Mango Blizzard has 3 scoops of ice cream & 1 scoop of mango, while the Mango Avalanche has 1 scoop of ice cream & 3 scoops of mango! Don’t be cheap! Spend that extra 20NT! Worth.It.

Huge chunks of fresh mango, drizzled with thick mango sauce and condensed milk…drools. The mango ice cream is more of a sorbet and it’s quite delicious and smooth. But who wants sorbet while you can have fresh mango! The ice is shaved extremely fine so it won’t scratch the roof of your mouth (if you try to make shaved ice at home, THIS always happens!).

I would eat this everyday if it wasn’t so detrimental to my health.

RIP~!!!! RIP: Yong Kang 15
